I knew exactly where I was going and how my career was going to pan out. Us Zoomers are pretty good at taking control of our destinies and making things happen. I was going to get the tertiary qualifications I needed and step into a career-girl-in-metro-Manila’s most comfortable pair of heels. A corporate girl in a corporate world - loving the hustle and bustle of downtown Makati every day. This was me and my life. Yup - you guessed it - precisely none of it turned out this way.

I took a break after graduating to takeS my Board Licensure Examination for Psychologists and Psychometricians (BLEPP.) This didn’t go according to plan - I didn’t pass. Then I landed my first Recruiter job - exactly a month before the pandemic hit and we were all sent home indefinitely. Management had a top-down, hierarchical, one-way-only communication style. The bosses were distant and unavailable. The only thing that mattered was the enormous pressure of hitting monthly targets to hire as many people as we could - trying to convince them to go into an office to work in the middle of a pandemic. No one felt listened to or cared for - the only thing that mattered was the numbers. I was isolated and alone at home - my despondency started to spiral. I needed saving from what was rapidly beginning to feel like a daily hell.

And then I saw my former high school classmate’s Facebook ad for recruitment assistance at Sharesource. I knew immediately that this was meant to be. This was the plan the universe had always had for me - only I didn’t know it. Never would I have imagined that virtual bonding and connection could be so positive! Sharesource values and respects their employees. No one is micromanaged and we’re given the autonomy to get the job done in the best way possible. Training, activities, huddles and evaluations expose me to great people every day and I’m motivated to explore and develop my potential. I feel valued, respected and cared for. Finally, when people ask me about my work, I can honestly say that I am happy, inspired and grateful. Every day I’m doing my best work, thanks to a genuinely awesome culture. 

The point of my story? If you think you know how your life should go, think again. We never know when the rug will be pulled out from under us. Challenges are always sent to help us grow and learn. Adapting and opening your eyes to new possibilities can lead to exponential growth you never foresaw. After the rockiest of career starts, I now work to my maximum potential every day in an environment that brings out the best in me.
